Noodle Doodle

Project Date: 2021
Dimensions: 24”x36”
Medium: ink, neon gel pen, and paper

Two lazy noodles resting in a field of neon static, Noodle Doodle began as an experiment in representing a sculptural concept. The intention was to create partially obscured three dimensional extrusions with as few strokes as possible. The result is a deeply textured illustration with an enchanting secret revealed by a black light.

The shapes are created with an ink roller. By applying more ink on the edges of the roller, the pattern produced gives a three-dimensional illusion. Stretch-marks appear as the roller slides and skips along the page. The noodle is quick and spontaneous.

The neon specks come to life under a black light. Each dot was indivudally stamped with a gel pen - the very pens used in middle school diaries. The points swarm to temporarily obscure the noodles; breaking the solid black ink into thousands of colorful atoms.

Hocus pocus. As you stare and relax your eyes, an illusion emerges. The neon field regresses to the background, and the noodles float in front of the page. The trick was an accidental surprise revealed to me when I framed the piece, stepped back, and took it all in.
